Yogesh Kathuniya: A Silver Medalist Soars at the 2024 Paris Paralympics

Yogesh Kathuniya has once again made India proud by clinching the silver medal in the Men's Para Discus Throw F56 category at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. His impressive throw of 42.22 meters not only marks a significant achievement for the athlete but also reinforces his position as a leading contender in para-athletics. This medal adds to his growing collection of accolades and showcases his dedication and talent in the sport.

A Journey of Resilience

Born on March 3, 1997, in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, Yogesh faced significant challenges early in life. At just nine years old, he was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome, a condition that severely affected his mobility. However, with the unwavering support of his mother, Meena Devi, who learned physiotherapy techniques, Yogesh began his journey towards recovery. By the age of 12, he had regained enough strength to walk again, laying the groundwork for his future in athletics.

Yogesh's academic journey began at the Indian Army Public School in Chandigarh, where his father served as a soldier. He later pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Kirori Mal College in Delhi. It was during his college years that he was introduced to para sports, thanks to Sachin Yadav, the General Secretary of the student union, who inspired him with videos of para-athletes. This newfound passion would soon transform into a remarkable athletic career.

Athletic Achievements

Yogesh made his debut in para athletics in 2016, quickly establishing himself as a formidable competitor. His talent became evident at the 2018 World Para Athletics European Championships in Berlin, where he set a world record with a discus throw of 45.18 meters. His journey continued with a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where he recorded a throw of 44.38 meters, earning recognition on the world stage.

His success has been consistent, and his recent performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics is a testament to his hard work and determination. He expressed pride in securing another medal, further solidifying his legacy in para-discuss throw.
